You hold an authorization to practise in another province or territory of Canada? You may obtain an equivalent AMF-issued certificate provided you meet certain qualification requirements specific to Québec.

Anyone who holds an authorization to practise in another province or territory of Canada may obtain an equivalent AMF-issued certificate provided they meet certain qualification (training, experience or examination) requirements.

These requirements relate to elements specific to Québec, like civil law or automobile insurance (“specific requirements”). They may include training, passing examinations or acquiring or having acquired relevant experience.

The specific requirements you need to meet will depend:

  • on the sector you’re practising in;
  • the province or territory where your authorization was issued;
  • the type of authorization you hold.

Applying for a professional recognition

The process for applying for recognition to the AMF varies by sector. Check the equivalency of your authorization to practise

The AMF has established a system of reference listing the specific requirements to be met by sector, province or territory of origin and authorization to practise held.

Important! Your authorization to practise is not equivalent to an AMF-issued certificate if it is restricted or subject to a supervision condition.

An authorization to practise is considered restricted when it limits what the authorization holder is allowed to offer. Examples include authorizations to practise in travel insurance, automobile insurance or pet insurance. The AMF does not issue restricted certificates.

An authorization subject to a supervision condition is one that allows the holder to act only under the supervision of a higher-level authorization holder.

If your authorization to practise falls into one of the following categories, you must meet the same qualification requirements as Québec candidates.

Apply for professional recognition if you live in Québec

If you hold an authorization to practise from another province or territory of Canada that is equivalent to the certificate issued by the AMF, you are eligible for professional recognition even if you live in Québec. Note that your authorization to practise is not equivalent to an AMF-issued certificate if it is restricted or subject to a supervision condition.

The AMF has established a system of reference listing the specific requirements to be met by sector, province or territory of origin and authorization to practise held.

Authorization to practise from outside of Canada

The professional recognition is available only to holders of an authorization to practise issued by a regulatory authority of another province or territory of Canada.

However, individuals who perform certain professional duties in the insurance and securities sectors in France or tis territories may, on certain conditions, obtain recognition of their professional competencies. You are no longer practising in another province or territory

If you held an authorization to practise from another Canadian province or territory that was equivalent to an AMF-issued certificate and you surrendered or did not renew it, it is still possible to obtain professional recognition.

You will need to meet the specific requirements for your sector, successfully complete a probationary period and apply for a representative’s certificate within three (3) years of the date you surrendered or did not renew your authorization to practise.

You are already AMF-certified in a sector and hold an authorization to practise in another sector from another province

If you are already an AMF-certified representative and hold an authorization to practise from another province or territory of Canada in another sector and if that authorization is equivalent to the certificate issued by the AMF, you are eligible for professional recognition for the other sector.

You will need to meet the specific requirements for your sector.

Using the title of financial planner in Québec

In Québec, nobody can use the title of financial planner or purport to offer financial planning services without holding the appropriate AMF-issued certificate. Registering under securities legislation in Québec

Canada has benefited from a harmonized nationwide securities registration regime since September 28, 2009. You can obtain registration in multiple provinces or territories through the passport system by applying to your provincial regulator.

Your firm must make a submission via the National Registration Database (NRD) to obtain a registration in Québec.
