Montréal – On April 18, 2017, Judge Christine Lafrance, Justice of the Peace of the Court of Québec, district of Gatineau, ordered Harold Mongrain and Réal Fiset to pay fines totalling $8,000 related to illegal practice as an insurance representative.
This decision is further to proceedings launched by the Autorité des marchés financiers (the “AMF”) in 2016. Harold Mongrain faced two counts of illegal practice as an insurance representative. Réal Fiset faced two counts of aiding Harold Mongrain in acting as such.
The AMF’s investigation showed that Harold Mongrain sold life insurance products to two clients while he was employed as an administrative assistant at Réal Fiset’s firm and his certificate was suspended. Réal Fiset, who held a certificate authorizing him to act in the insurance of persons sector, signed the life insurance applications as an insurance representative.
Judge Lafrance ordered each of the accused to pay fines totalling $4,000.
The Autorité des marchés financiers (the “AMF”) is the regulatory and oversight body for Québec’s financial sector.
