Montréal - With the emergence of websites and applications used for remunerated passenger transportation services (ride-sharing) in Québec, the Autorité des marchés financiers ("AMF") is offering advice about car insurance to Quebeckers wishing to use their own vehicles to provide such services via websites or applications that allow them to communicate directly with customers.
The AMF reminds consumers that the Québec Ministry of Transportation has posted a Q&A regarding the legal framework applicable to remunerated passenger transportation services This link will open in a new window (in French only).
In addition, the AMF wishes to point out that Québec Automobile Insurance Policy Form Q.P.F. No. 1 - Owner's Form contains coverage exclusions, including the use of a vehicle as a taxicab or as a chauffeur-driven vehicle. These exclusions could apply if a loss occurs while an insured is offering transportation services for remuneration using his own vehicle. As a result, the insured might not be compensated for damages to his vehicle. The AMF suggests that consumers contact their insurers in this regard.
The Autorité des marchés financiers (the AMF) is the regulatory and oversight body for Québec's financial sector.
