Montréal - As the uberX ride service arrives in the Québec City area, the Autorité des marchés financiers (the "AMF") has some advice about automobile insurance for Quebeckers wanting to use their personal car to provide for-pay rides through websites or apps such as uberX that connect them with people looking for a ride.

The AMF notes that the Transports Québec website contains an FAQ section that provides legal information about charging people for rides This link will open in a new window.(in French only)

The AMF also reminds consumers that Québec Automobile Insurance Policy Form Q.P.F. No. 1 - Owners' Form contains certain exclusions, particularly when a vehicle is used as a taxicab or a chauffeur-driven vehicle. These exclusions could apply if a loss occurs when an insured gives for-pay rides using his personal vehicle. Under these exclusions, the insured might not be compensated for damage to his vehicle. The AMF suggests that consumers contact their insurer to avoid a legal dispute.

The Autorité des marchés financiers (the "AMF") is the regulatory and oversight body for Québec's financial sector.
