2008 RRSP season in full swing - AMF launches Have fun learning more about RRSPs campaign

Organization

Montréal – Further to the January 14 announcement by the Autorité des marchés financiers (AMF) of the creation of an RRSP section on its website containing numerous theme-based documents, the AMF today launched its Have fun learning more about RRSPs campaign with fun educational tools to help consumers prepare for retirement.

"The more information consumers have, the better they can plan for retirement. And what better way to learn than to have fun in doing so? That's the idea behind our Have fun learning more about RRSPs campaign,” said Anne-Marie Poitras, Superintendent, Client Services and Compensation. “In the past two years, the AMF has intensified its efforts to educate and raise awareness among investors by giving them access to a wealth of educational tools. We’re only too pleased to make other tools available to them,” added Ms. Poitras.

The following have been posted on the RRSP 2007-2008 section of the AMF site:

  • Two easy-to-use calculators so that consumers can check how much they will need for their retirement years based on their own estimates and the amounts they will need to set aside periodically;
  • Crossword puzzles, which include anagrams, to help them better understand financial vocabulary;
  • Three levels of quizzes (beginner, intermediate, expert) so they can test their retirement knowledge.

Ms. Poitras pointed out that in addition to the educational tools in the RRSP 2007-2008 section, other documents about saving and investing are available in the section for consumers on the AMF website. "We encourage consumers to consult the different documents on our site. We hope they will help them better grasp the complex world of financial products and services," said Ms. Poitras. She also noted that consumers could obtain assistance and copies of educational documents by contacting the AMF Information Centre.

Lastly, the AMF reminds consumers that RRSPs are just one of the many retirement savings tools available on the market.

The Autorité des marchés financiers (AMF) is the regulatory and oversight body for Québec’s financial sector.
