Montréal – The President and CEO of the Autorité des marchés financiers ("AMF"), Jean St-Gelais, is pleased to announce the 2009 projects that have been selected for financial support from the Education and Good Governance Fund ("Fund").
Over the past few weeks, the Fund Assessment Committee has reviewed the submissions and recommended that the AMF provide just over $600,000 for 12 projects in accordance with the priorities set out in the call for projects. “Several of the projects selected this year pertain to investor protection and education and enhanced knowledge in the fields related to the AMF’s activities. The selected projects are intended for students, young adults, immigrants, members of cultural communities, seniors and families,” noted Mr. St-Gelais.
New projects
“La finance personnelle pour non initiés : un parcours essentiel à l’intégration des nouveaux immigrants” is a new project of the Centre de liaison et d’aide multiethnique which involves awareness, education and information workshops about the purchase of financial products by new immigrants.
“La connaissance financière des investisseurs québécois,” a research project submitted by Laval University Professor Jean-Marc Suret which includes the development of a comprehensive tool for evaluating the actual and perceived financial knowledge of investors in Québec.
“À vos amours, à vos affaires. Information et réflexion pour simplifier la vie à deux,” a series of personal finance guides intended for couples produced jointly by the Association coopérative d’économie familiale Rive-Sud de Québec and the Association coopérative d’économie familiale Lanaudière.
Ongoing projects
“Parlons d’argent,” a projet of the Centre ressources jeunesse de l’Abitibi-Témiscamingue, in partnership with the Centre local d’emploi and the Caisse Desjardins of Rouyn-Noranda, which will provide training on personal finance for 15 to 35 year olds.
“Dollars make cents (sense)”, a program of the Jamaican Canadian Community Woman’s League of Montreal which promotes bilingual financial literacy initiatives among visible minorities, youth, seniors and single-parent families in Montréal’s Côte-des-Neiges, Notre-Dame-de-Grâce and Lasalle communities.
“Serez-vous le prochain poisson?”, a program for the prevention of financial fraud among seniors offered by the Association québécoise pour la défense des personnes retraitées et préretraitées (AQDR).
“L’assurance auto, un casse-tête?”, a series of information workshops for young adults given by the Association coopérative d’économie familiale de l’Ile-Jésus (ACEF) at the Collège Montmorency.
“Passeport MÉDAC,” a program introducing small investors to the workings of the financial markets offered in partnership with UQAM’s École des sciences de la gestion.
“Dans la Marge jusqu’au cou!”, a campaign to raise awareness about credit and debt run by the Coalition des associations de consommateurs du Québec.
The design of a game highlighting the importance of protecting personal information, a project initiated by the Collectif autonome des carrefours jeunesse-emploi du Québec intended to prevent financial fraud among young adults.
“Prévenir la fraude: pour un nouvel environnement réglementaire et organisationnel des gestionnaires de patrimoine,” a research project submitted by Laval University Professor Raymonde Crête.
A research project of Professor Nabil Khoury of the Chaire Desjardins de gestion des produits dérivés/UQAM that examines the impact of reducing the minimum quotation spread on the Montréal Exchange and competing U.S. exchanges.
“The Fund is a valuable educational and knowledge-building tool," added Mr. St-Gelais. “By supporting projects in four areas, namely educating consumers of financial products and services, protecting the public, promoting good governance and enhancing knowledge, the AMF helps improve knowledge of financial matters in Québec. The Fund supports a wide range of initiatives, including university research, community awareness and financial education of young people.”
The Autorité des marchés financiers (AMF) is the regulatory and oversight body for Québec's financial sector.
