Georges Benoit pleads guilty
Montréal – Georges Benoit pleaded guilty before Judge Gilles Garneau of the Court of Québec, Criminal and Penal Division, district of Montréal, to the two counts brought against him.
Mr. Benoit pleaded guilty to the following:
- Assisting Gilbert Chartrand, in Montréal and surrounding areas, between August 1, 1998 and October 10, 1998, with carrying on business as a securities adviser within the meaning of section 5 of the Securities Act to the Fédération des cégeps without being registered as such with the Commission des valeurs mobilières du Québec, in violation of section 148 of the Act, and thereby committing an offence under section 202 of the Act, with reference to section 208 thereunder, and causing himself to be liable to the penalty provided for under section 202.
- Making a misrepresentation, in Montréal and surrounding areas, between December 1, 1998 and March 31, 1999, in respect of a transaction in a security, by failing to mention to the Fédération des cégeps that foreign investments did not match its risk profile, thereby committing an offence under subparagraph (1), section 197 of the Securities Act, and causing himself to be liable to the penalty provided for under section 204 of the Act.
Mr. Benoit was ordered to pay $5,000 on each count, for a total of $10,000.
