How to obtain a representative’s certificate
Step 1: Satisfy the minimum qualifications
Persons wishing to obtain a Group Insurance of Persons representative certificate must successfully complete the specialized training of the Life Licence Qualification Program (LLQP) offered by an AMF-accredited provider. The course is valid one year and comprises the following four modules:
Ethics and Professional Practice (Civil Code)
Accident and Sickness Insurance
Segregated Funds and Annuities
Several course providers offer the LLQP training. You can obtain the contact information of the AMF-accredited providers below:
Course providers are responsible for distributing the exam preparation material. To obtain this material, you must first register with the Canadian Insurance Participant Registry (CIPR) and give your number to the Course provider.

Step 2: Pass the LLPQ examinations
The AMF requires future professionals to pass the following examinations, based on the sector or sector class in which they plan to practice, in order to ensure they have the necessary skills to properly advise clients.
If you wish to write an AMF examination, you must follow the registration process. You have to give your Canadian Insurance Participant Registry number to confirm the successful completion of the LLQP program.
The AMF offers the following tools to help you prepare for the examinations.
When passing the examination, the AMF will provide you an E tablet containing all the exam preparation material. The The Tablet User Guide and the Tablet User Guide video are available to help you prepare for the examination.
An LLQP examination is valid for one year from the date of the first passed examination. A failed exam may be rewritten twice without restrictions.

Step 3: Complete a probationary period
Once all the required examinations have been passed, candidates must complete a probationary period where the knowledge and skills necessary to practice the profession will be applied , in a real but supervised setting. Trainees must work a minimum of 28 hours per week. All examinations must be valid when beginning the probationary period, which extends for:
- 12 weeks for the Group Insurance of Persons sector;
- 6 weeks for the Group Insurance Plans sector class; and
- 6 weeks for the Group Annuity Plans sector class.
In accordance with section 49.1 of the Regulation respecting the issuance and renewal of representatives' certificates (D-9.2, r.7), trainees will complete a case for each of the sector classes chosen. The supervisors will use the case study to validate the trainee’s understanding of the process that requires them to prepare a recommendation before ending their probationary period.
To do so, the AMF proposes Case Study Models for probationary period supervisors and trainees in the Group insurance of persons sector.
The Answer Key is available for supervisors upon written request to the AMF. It is a confidential document and its use must must remain restricted. To obtain a copy, please fill the following form and return it by email at the following address: [email protected]

Step 4: Apply for a representative’s certificate in the sector or a sector class
In order to obtain a representative’s certificate, you must submit an application to the AMF before the validity of your examinations expires. If the validity of your examinations expires during your probationary period, you have 30 days from the end of this period to apply.
While your application is being processed and on receipt of a notice to this effect from the AMF, the probationary certificate will remain in effect for a maximum of 45 days as of the end of the probationary period.
It should be noted that before issuing a representative’s certificate the Authority will take into account information related to the applicant's degree of honesty (criminal record, bankruptcy, etc.) as well as information related to the job held in case of dual employment.
